Avoiding Common Mistakes: How to Properly Install Safe-T-Cable®

Date Posted: 9/16/2025

Safe-T-Cable is a reliable, efficient, and time-saving alternative to traditional safety wire. But like any tool, its effectiveness depends on proper installation. Incorrect use can compromise both safety and performance. This blog will walk you through the most common mistakes to avoid and provide step-by-step guidance on the correct way to install Safe-T-Cable.

Common Mistakes

Even experienced technicians sometimes fall into bad habits when installing Safe-T-Cable. Here are the most frequent errors:

 1. Skipping Verification

  • Skipping steps can result in improper tension or poor locking, reducing the effectiveness of the installation. This can include not verifying the tension of the Safe-T-Cable application tool using the torque verification block or the MPT-250C-SC

 2. Threading the Cable in a Negative Direction

  • Safe-T-Cable must always be threaded in a positive or neutral direction. Threading in the wrong direction can loosen the fastener.

 3. Tensioning the Cable by Hand

  • Hand tensioning does not achieve the precise tension needed. Always use the proper DMC tool following the installation steps to ensure consistency and safety.

4. Terminating Multiple Ferrules on One Cable

  • Each ferrule is manufactured to precise size and hardness specifications to work with specific cables and tools. Using more than one ferrule per cable compromises the integrity of the installation. If you’re working in tight spaces where clearance between the fastener head and the surface is limited, use DMC’s elongated ferrules instead.
    •

5. Reusing Cable After Initial Termination

  • Safe-T-Cable is designed for a single-use. Reusing a cable that has already been terminated weakens its performance and increases the risk of failure. This is prohibited according to AS3510, AS4536, and AS567 specifications.

The Correct Way to Install Safe-T-Cable

To get the best performance out of Safe-T-Cable, follow these steps carefully:

 1. Thread the Cable Assembly

  • Pass the cable assembly through the fasteners in a positive or neutral direction.

2. Insert the Cable

  • Place the free end of the cable through the ferrule and then through the tool nose.

 3. Tool Setup

  • With a Pre-Set Tool: Insert the free end into the cable entrance and push until it exits at the bottom. Pull slack from the cable until resistance is felt.
  • With an Adjustable Tool: Wrap the cable clockwise around the tensioning wheel one full revolution. Rotate the wheel until you hear and feel several distinct clicks; this indicates proper tension.

Additional Tips for Success

  • Allow the tool to pull the cable to the proper tension.

  • Crimp a single ferrule to secure the cable in place.

  • The tool will cut the cable flush. Always discard the scrap.

  • In limited-clearance applications, substitute standard ferrules with elongated ones for proper fit.
